Historical & Nature Tour

• The Shai Hills Resource Reserves consists of savannah plains surrounding a range of southern outlier inselbergs that reach an altitude of 290 meters. There are over 15 troops of Olive Baboons dispersed within the Reserve, and each troop has its own home range. There are also Green and spotted monkeys, as well as monitor lizards and snakes. Within the reserve is also a community of antelopes, the kobs, bushbucks, and duikers. The Shai people originally inhabited the historical caves from the late Stone Age until 1892. In 1892, the British army expelled them from the Hills and forced them to move to other parts of the region. The Shais lived in clans, with each clan occupying a cave and its surrounding areas. Visitors can take a step back in time by exploring the numerous historic archaeological sites and remains on the hillsides or by visiting one of the most essential traditional religious shrines of the Shai people within the Reserve.

• W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Center for Pan-African Culture is a memorial place, a research facility, and a tourist attraction in the Cantonments area of Accra, Ghana, that was opened to the public in 1985. It is named in dedication to the African-American, Pan-Africanist, W. E. B. Du Bois. Labadi Beach, Coco Beach, and Bojo Beach are among the most vibrant and visited beaches in Accra. Spend the afternoon at one of these beaches to enjoy the breeze.

Nature Tour

• The Aburi Botanical Gardens were opened in 1890 as a sanatorium for Gold Coast government officials. Over the years, the garden has played many roles, including teaching methods in agriculture. Today, the garden is playing a role in the fight to save plants through research and conservation efforts focused on medicinal plants.

Historical Tour

• The Cape Coast Castle was the home of the slave trade from the 16th through the 19th century. Europeans built the castle as a hub for human traffic between Europe and the Americas. Cape Coast Castle is a must-see destination. It is the place to see and fathom the history of the slave trade. This is an impressive museum offering information on Ghana’s history, the slave trade, and local culture. No visit to the Cape Coast will be complete without touring the dungeons of the castle and going through the “gate of no return”. Many notable Americans, including President Obama and his family, have visited Cape Coast Castle.
• Elmina is the home of one of Ghana’s finest attractions, St. George’s Castle. St. George’s Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and was later taken over by the Dutch. A visit to Elmina should include a tour of St. George’s Castle. A walk through the dungeons will give one an appreciation of what it means to be free. The tour guards will narrate to students the horrible repugnance of the slave trade.
• Kankum National Park is 234 square miles of protected rainforest, home to endangered mammals such as forest elephants, bongo antelope, giant hogs, flying squirrels, leopards, and various species of monkeys, including the Diana monkey. Kankum National Park is the home of the famous and popular Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walkway is a 350-meter wooden walkway suspended about 40 meters above ground. It offers various viewing platforms for spectacular and dizzying treetop views of the forest.
• Assin Manso Slave Market & Slave River (Ancestral Park) is the largest slave market from the 15th century till the end of slavery in the 19th century. This site is now a sacred ground dedicated to the memory of those men and women forced to leave their homes.

Kumasi Cultural and Historical Tour

• The Manhyia Palace Museum provides insight into the rich Ashanti culture. It communicates the historical and cultural role of the kings, queens, and leaders of the Ashantis before the British invasion. The Museum houses drums and other artifacts such as palanquins that are over 100 years old. In 2004, the Canadian Museum of Civilization repatriated some artifacts taken away during the Yaa Asantewaa War of 1900, including a war drum and a royal stool, to the museum.

  • Kumasi National Cultural Center
  • Okonfo Anokye Sword (the Eighth Wonder of the World). Muhammad Ali tried to pull it in 1964 during a visit to Ghana, but could not.
  • Bonwire Kente Weaving Village is the home of the colorful Ghanaian traditional fabric commonly known as Kente. Kente weaving at Bonwire dates to the 17th century. Legend states that the original two friends who started Kente weaving learned their weaving lessons from watching a spider weave its web. Today, Bonwire is the unofficial Kente weaving capital of the world.

Akosombo for Relaxation

• The Dodi Princess on the Volta Lake for a two-hour cruise to Dodi Island for fun recreation and other activities. Dodi Princess is the only cruise boat on the Volta Lake. It was built in Ghana at the Team Shipyard for agricultural purposes and named. In 1991, it was converted to a pleasure tour boat for tourists. At Dodi, you will be welcomed by the island’s inhabitants with lively cultural music and traditional dances.
• The Akosombo Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River, providing electricity for the aluminum industry. Today, it provides electricity for Ghana. The construction of the dam between 1961 and 1965 flooded the Volta River basin, creating what is known as Volta Lake, the largest artificial lake in the world.

Last Day Travel

• The famous Makola Market, the most vivacious bustling market in all of West Africa, is a place to explore trade and commerce in the open market. A stop at the National Arts Center for shopping.
• Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum (Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park), the burial site of the first president of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
• Depart from Accra to the home airport in the USA (Washington Metro Area Airport).
