Aburi Botanical Gardens

Aburi Botanical Gardens is a botanical garden in Aburi in Eastern region of South Ghana.

The garden occupies an area of 64.8 hectares. It was opened in March, 1890. Before the garden was established, it was the site of a sanatorium built in 1875 for Gold Coast government officials. During the governorship of William Brandford-Griffith, a Basel missionary supervised clearing of land around the sanatorium to start the Botanic Department. In 1890 William Crowther, a student from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, was appointed the garden’s first curator. The gardens played an important role in encouraging cocoa production in South Ghana, by supplying cheap cocoa seedlings and information about scientific farming methods. After Hevea Brasiliensis was sent to Aburi from Kew in 1893, the gardens also encouraged rubber production in Ghana.

Boti Falls

Boti Falls is a twin waterfall located at Boti in Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region of Ghana. These twin falls are referred to as female and male.

The Mystery Stone

The story of the Mystery Stone is that a stone was in the way of a road, and every time they moved it, it came back to its original position. It was taken progressively further away, and always came back, eventually the road had to be diverted to go around it. During the British in the then Gold Coast, there was a road that was to be laid near the Larabange Mosque and a stone was removed during the process to make way for the road. The next day, the stone was found again in the same place it was displaced from. The stone was again removed from the way and the same thing happened the next day. Later, the officials decided to build the road around the stone and it became the mystic stone.

Monkey Sanctuary

Created in the 1970s is the home of birds, reptiles, deer, and about 700 monkeys. The monkeys are protected by traditional laws. Monkeys which die either through accident or naturally are given burial by the Fetish Priest of Daworo. A coffin is provided; the monkey will then be wrapped in a calico before it is put into the coffin for burial.

Assin Manso Slave Market & Slave River (Ancestral Park)

The largest slave market from the 15th century till the end of slavery in the 19th century. This site is now a sacred ground dedicated to the memory of those men and women forced to leave their homes. There is a near tangible silence at this site occasionally disturbed by birds and the two rivers at the site. See the tombs of 2 slaves returned from the US and Jamaica.

Akosombo Dam

The Akosombo Dam, also known as the Volta Dam, is a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River in southeastern Ghana in the Akosombo gorge and part of the Volta River Authority. The construction of the dam flooded part of the Volta River Basin, and led to the subsequent creation of Lake Volta. Lake Volta is the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area. It covers 8,502 square kilometers (3,283 sq mi), which is 3.6% of Ghana’s land area. With a volume of 148 cubic kilometers Lake Volta is the world’s third largest man-made lake by volume, the largest being Lake Kariba which is located between Zimbabwe and Zambia in Southern Africa and contains 185 cubic kilometers of water.

The primary purpose of the Akosombo Dam was to provide electricity for the aluminium industry. The Akosombo Dam was called “the largest single investment in the economic development plans of Ghana. “Its original electrical output was 912 megawatts (1,223,000 hp), which was upgraded to 1,020 megawatts (1,370,000 hp) in a retrofit project that was completed in 2006.

The flooding that created the Lake Volta reservoir displaced many people and had a significant impact on the environment.

Dodi Island

Travel on the Dodi Princess on the Volta Lake for a two-hour cruise to Dodi Island for fun recreation and other activities. Dodi Princess is the only cruise boat on the Volta Lake. It was built in Ghana at the Team Shipyard for agricultural purposes and named. In 1991, it was converted to a pleasure tour boat for tourists. At Dodi, you will be welcomed by the inhabitants of the island with lively cultural music and traditional dances.

Mole National Park

The Mole National Park is the home to elephants, leopards, and rare birds as the which-back vulture. In the western part of the park, the Konkori Escarpment has panoramic views and overlooks waterholes where the animal drink. Species of special interest include Elephants, Buffalos, Kobs, Western Hartebeests, Roan Antelopes, Defassa, Waterbucks, Oribis, Bohor Reedbucks, and Red-flanked Duiker. The park is also home to rare endangered species such as Yellow-backed Duiker and Black and White Colobus monkeys.

Amedzole Village

Amedzofe is the highest habitable place in Ghana at more than 600 meters and is perched at the foot of Mt. Gemi. The 4-meter tall cross on the top of Mt. Gemi was constructed by German missionaries in the 1930s, along with a church and a bell tower. Both the mountain and the church site offer a dramatic view to Lake Volta in clear weather. Hike the trail to the top of Mt. Gemi and enjoy a 360 degree, descend through farms to Amedzofe falls, and walk through the village and count the many steps to the old German church and its bell tower.


